Spring Projects - Read Road Right of Way Policy

Many residents are getting ready for spring/summer projects such as landscaping, fencing or other. Along with obtaining locates via 811, residents are advised to read the Road Right of Way (ROW) policy to avoid issues.

Bumper Pine Cone Year - Spring Cleaning in Our Street Gutters –  Take 5 Minutes

There is an unusually high amount of pine cones that are on the ground and in street gutters this year. Residents are asked to take just 5 minutes to clean up pine cones and pine needles (and mud, dirt, stones) from the street gutter in front of their property and dispose of it properly. This will assist proper drainage as well as prevent damage to the adjoining asphalt.  Our street sweeper will just mash and scatter the cones and make it worse. Thank you for your assistance.

Trail Access

Residents can continue to access greenbelt trails via the district's trail access easement next to 747 Oak Drive.  Residents should be respectful as they go down the driveway, through the gate and down the dirt road into the gulch greenbelt trails. The district will be replacing the trail sign in the next few months.

Wildfire Mitigation Starts Mid-June

This year's District wildfire mitigation project will begin mid June. Scroll to bottom story for details. Homeowners are responsible for their own mitigation. See our local Wildfire Adapted Partnership website for mitigation resources along with resources on Defensible Space and Home Ignition Zones.

Commitment to Mitigation

As a district, Durango West 2 takes wildfire mitigation very seriously. The district has $31,360 budgeted in 2025 for its continuous commitment to wildfire mitigation around the district. This will allow us to continue the work we have been doing over the past seven years. In 2018,  DW2 began a three-year plan developed by Fire Smart Inc to reduce wildfire risk within the common areas of our community.  The total area mitigated is approximately 64.45 acres which constitutes all of the district open space properties. Beginning in 2022, DW2 began maintaining and improving mitigation treatments in these previously treated common areas. Treatments were again prioritized due to risk and need and are re-evaluated each year. The greenbelt mitigation treatments are designed to reduce the intensity and spread rates of wildfire in and around the district. These treatments accomplish this by reducing fuel density and connectivity.  These treatments are designed to work in combination with mitigation treatments by residents on private properties that border the greenbelt.

DW2 Community Garage Sale is Saturday, June 14th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

So save the date and start gathering your stuff! Fun neighborhood event.

Nuisance Barking - Be Considerate

Warm weather means more windows are open, day and night.  Please be considerate of your neighbors.  Barking dogs, in particular, are not only annoying to your neighbors but can be a violation of the La Plata County Code. To report a violation of the code, please contact the La Plata County Humane Society at (970) 259-2847.  More information

Find Your Water Shutoff

If you don't know where your main water shut off is located outside, now is the time to locate and mark it. Some residents have landscaped over theirs. It is important that you know where your shut off is for repairs, emergency, etc. and have it accessible to you and the district. If you don't know where it is, you can contact our water operator to assist you for a fee or contact Novo Utility Services, Tommy Novotny at 303-999-9892 who can help you. www.novoutilityservices.com  Please notify the district of the location for our records.  You should also know where your sewer clean out is.

Fire Hydrants Access - 3 Foot Clearance

If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please keep it accessible year-round.  Springtime and summer are great times to remove shrubs, branches, etc that block visual and physical access.  There should be a three-foot clear circle around the hydrant.
