Durango West 2  E-News May 2026

DW2 E-News May 2026

DW2 Community Garage Sale is Saturday, June 13th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Save the date and start gathering your stuff for this fun neighborhood event. The district's role in this is simply to alert residents, and pay for an ad in the Durango Herald.

Open Burning Restrictions

Durango West 2 has a policy that prohibits open burning within the subdivision. This policy (Resolution 2020-06) is especially important this year, as our area is currently experiencing D3 (Extreme) to D4 (Exceptional) drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Fire danger is currently high. While small storms are appreciated, they do little to reduce overall wildfire risk.

The residential density of our community coupled with the dry vegetation and gusty wind conditions would suggest using the utmost caution when grilling or cooking food outdoors and refraining from using burning units for outdoor recreation and/or heating.  Although Resolution 2020-6 allows for small patio fires (wood or gas) in designated devices, we strongly discourage their use given current conditions.

Please note that the district is additionally subject to all La Plata County fire restrictions, which may go into place this summer.

Watering Restrictions Update: Days and Times

At its April 15 meeting, the DW2 Board revised the subdivision’s watering days and times, effective April 26. The Board approved an approach that assigns watering days based on location within the district. This staggered schedule helps promote more consistent water usage and allows time for system storage tanks to refill, particularly on Sundays.  See map and read more. As a community in Southwest Colorado, water conservation needs to be a way of life. Street Cleaning Delayed to May 12-14 - No Parking on Street; Remove Driveway Bridge Material(s)

The district's spring street (gutter) cleaning ws delayed due to weather and will take place now Tuesday, May 12 to May 14.  Especially during these days, please do not park vehicles or trailers in the street or partially on the street/gutter section. Remove anything you have at the bottom of your driveway to bridge your driveway and the street such as mud, dirt, needles, rubber, wood, or other material or products during these days.  These present a major issue to our street sweeper both in terms of time and effectiveness.

For the benefit of everyone - please take five minutes to remove needles, pine cones and leaves in the street gutter in front of your house – that means picking them up and disposing of them, not pushing them into the street. Some residents have a lot of needles and leaves in the street curb gutter and others don’t have any. It will make the street sweeping go faster (less noise in the neighborhood)  and cost less if people would just clean up in front of their own homes. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Spring Projects - Read DW2 Road Right of Way Policy

Many residents are getting ready for spring/summer projects such as landscaping, fencing or other. Along with obtaining locates via 811, residents are advised to be familiar with utility easements along the sides and back of their property as well as to read the Road Right of Way (ROW) policy to avoid issues.

District Wildfire Mitigation Starts Mid-July

This year's District wildfire mitigation projects will begin mid July.  These mitigation treatments are designed to reduce the intensity and spread rates of wildfire in and around the district by reducing fuel density and connectivity.   Scroll to bottom story for details. Homeowners are responsible for their own mitigation. See our local Wildfire Adapted Partnership website for mitigation resources along with resources on Defensible Space and Home Ignition Zones.

Trail Access

The district does have a 40 foot wide easement along the driveway edge of 747 Oak Drive and through the two gates. Residents have the right to access greenbelt trails via this trail access easement and should not be discouraged to do so.  Users should be respectful as they use this access easement as it is through private property.

Road Projects June 22 to 26

Our road maintenance projects will take place June 22 to 26. Projects include sealcoating Michael Way; crackfilling, infrared patching and sealcoating Pine Ridge Loop; infrared patching throughout subdivision including some cul-de-sacs; and water testing on three washpans.

Home Wildfire Mitigation and Home Hardening

Now is a great time to conduct mitigation around your home. Resources at: Wildfire Adapted Partnership  including a rebate for chipping.

Durango Fire & Rescue recommends the following small actions that can have a big impact in reducing wildfire risk to your home:

  • Remove all leaves, needles and other debris from all decks, roofs, and gutters.
  • Screen attic, roof, eaves, and foundation vents with 1/8th-inch metal mesh.
  • Screen or wall-in stilt foundations and decks with 1/8th-inch metal mesh.
  • Mow grass and weeds to a height of 4 inches or less.
  • Rake and remove pine needles and other flammable debris from a 5-foot radius around the foundation of your home and deck.

How to Report District Issues

To ensure your concerns are heard and addressed as quickly as possible, please contact the District directly rather than posting on social media.

Why Email Us?

  • Direct Action: Social media posts aren't monitored for official maintenance or policy requests. An email ensures the district is alerted immediately.
  • Problem Assessment: Direct reporting allows us to investigate the full extent of an issue and address it at the source.
  • Board Visibility: Your formal input provides our board members with the necessary data to consider and act on community needs during official meetings.

Please send your concerns to: dw2@dgowest2.com

The Next Board Meeting is June 17th at 5 p.m. at the Mail House. There is no May Board Meeting.
